Customer Service Podium

July, 2019 - Milton, FL

The main structure of the table is constructed from a single piece of live-edge quilted maple. The bark had to be removed from the live-edge prior to any surface milling. This was done with a chisel and cleaned up with sandpaper.
Two traditional black cherry bow-ties were inlaid to provide a mechanical clamp against the large crack that protruded from one end.
The main structure of the table was fabricated by cutting apposing 45-degree miters in the maple. Floating tenons were used to aid in alignment and provide additional strength to the joint. The result was a c-shaped structure where the grain and figuring of the wood wraps around the corners.
A cherry colored gel stain was used to tint the maple. This tone was enough to darken the wood without distracting from the grain of the quilted and birds-eye figuring. Five coats of polyurethane were applied over the gel stain. Polyurethane provides a durable finish that will protect the wood from moisture and everyday contact.

War Chest

June, 2019 - Milton, FL

Commissioned going away gift for a respected military leader. This chest was designed to mimic in appearance and construction chests found commonly in the Campaign Furniture genre. It contains several small details that highlight the craftsmanship and quality found in high end furniture.

Construction Details: Handcrafted from a single Mahogany board. Mahogany is a wood traditionally used in campaign furniture because of it’s attractive appearance and stability when exposed to varying moisture and temperatures. The alignment of grains across adjacent surfaces is a small detail that provides balance and  improves the appearance without being obvious. The joinery used is thru dovetails. This provides an attractive edge detail and durable construction. The darker end-grain from the adjacent board is clearly visible. The end grain is darker because it absorbs finish more readily than side grain.

Premium brass hardware was selected for the handles and hinges. The brass handles are inset for an attractive low profile appearance. These handles are polished and unfinished. Over time, they will age to an attractive patina.

The chest was finished with three coats of clear lacquer and three coats of wax. This provides a durable easy to maintain finish.

Dimensions: 20” Wide X 12” Deep X 14” Tall
Material: Mahogany

Arbor & Side Entrance Gate

August, 2018 - Milton, FL

One of a kind arbor and side entrance with heavy duty custom gate.
  • Traditional timber frame construction (no metallic fasteners), large hand cut mortise & tenon joinery.
  • Marine grade epoxy commonly used for wooden boat building was used to secure joints and seal the end grain of each piece.
  • The timber is locally sourced cypress from Wilson Lumber. Cypress is a great lumber for exterior projects as it's rot and bug resistant.
  • The timber posts extend 36 inches into the ground into 400lb concrete footers.
  • After consulting with the customer, the Arbor was painted with a commercial grade exterior paint. Application of the paint helps to protect the Arbor from weather and reduce the frequency of periodic maintenance.
  • With the paint applied, the wood is less susceptible to the expanding, contracting, splitting and cracking caused by cycles of being wet or dry and hot or cold.
  • Side fence panels are constructed of treated lumber and faced with Hardie board. Hardie board is siding constructed of concrete and fiberglass fillers. It's a durable exterior layer that is rot and bug resistant.
  • Quality exterior hardware was used. Handle and screws are powder coated. Self closing hinges are used to ensure the gate remains closed.

Walnut Live Edge Growth Chart

October, 2017 - Niceville, FL

Walnut
Custom planed to 3/4" thickness
Trim routed numbers, finished with a paring chisel
Hand painted accents with satin black
2 coats of wipe on semi-gloss polyurethane finish

Close friends asked if we could find a really nice piece of lumber to build a growth chart for their son. We dug through our stash of walnut and found a piece with some unique grain.

The piece started as a rough cut board approximately 1" thick. It had a pretty good warp and twist on it that needed to be addressed before we could run out through the planer. We knocked the high spurs down with hand planes until one side was flat. After a few passes through the planer, the board was ¾" thick.
